      Michael Angino
      SHPE President

      Michael Angino is a junior at McMurtry College majoring in Electrical Engineering with a Certificate in RCEL (Rice Center for Engineering Leadership). He was born in Los Angeles, CA and grew up in California, Florida, and North Carolina. Michael joined SHPE to meet other students and professionals interested in his field and learn more about the countless opportunities within all STEM fields. As a Freshman, Michael joined SHPE as a Freshman Class Representative. Afterward, he became EVP and now President. Feel free to reach out if you want to learn more about ELEC, RCEL, or SHPE.

      Andres Mazas
      Internal Vice President

      Andrés Mazas is a Junior at Martel College majoring in chemical and biomolecular engineering. He is from Long Beach, California. Andrés joined SHPE his freshman year to connect and bond with peers with similar academic and professional aspirations. He quickly became involved as a Volunteers Chair, and now Chief of Staff.       Leslie Arrazolo
      External Vice President

      Leslie Arrazolo is a junior at Brown College studying Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. She grew up in the US-Mexico border cities, Matamoros, Mexico and Brownsville, Texas. Leslie joined SHPE because she wanted to develop her professional skills and loved the uplifting community that the organization provided. She was the Internal Professional Development Chair her sophomore year. Leslie has learned a lot in her time at SHPE and now, as EVP, hopes to provide the best opportunities to SHPE’s members so that they can be best equipped to succeed.       Rubén S. Marroquín
      Chief of Staff

      Rubén S. Marroquín is a sophomore at Will Rice studying electrical & computer engineering along with an engineering design minor and a certificate in engineering leadership. He is the youngest son of two immigrant parents from Mexico and was born and raised in Houston, TX. He joined SHPE freshman year as the volunteer chair to build networking skills and meet professionals in his field. He has now become chief of staff and is open to connecting with you for any help.

      Diego Alec Lopez-Bernal
      Marketing Director

      Diego Alec Lopez-Bernal is a Sophmore at Wil Rice College majoring in Mechanical Engineering who has leadership training from The Doerr Institute at Rice. He was born and raised in Mission, Texas which is only 10 minutes away from where his family grew up in Mexico! Diego joined SHPE during his freshman year to grow as a leader, gain interpersonal communication and networking skills, and explore STEM opportunities. He started out as the Philanthropy Chair and is now the Marketing Director.       Alan Lopez
      Outreach Director

      Alan Lopez is a Sophomore at Martel College majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering. He has been part of the SHPE family since high school where he helped create a SHPE Jr. Chapter as a freshman at Lynwood High in Southern California. Alan joined the Rice SHPE Chapter in his freshman year as part of the community outreach team in order to help underserved communities by connecting young students of color to higher education and the STEM field. He hopes to continue to build a welcoming community at Rice and to have a positive impact on rising youth in the greater Houston area.

      Lucy Hernandez
      Treasurer

      Lucy Hernandez is a Junior at McMurtry College majoring in Mechanical Engineering. She was born and raised in Plainview, Texas by parents who emigrated from Chihuahua, Mexico. She is also involved in Rice’s chapter of the Association of Women in Math and the Association of Mechanical Engineers. She is open and always happy to discuss MechE life and classes at Rice, ways to get involved in STEM organizations (like SHPE!), or general questions about life on campus and life as a low-income, Latine (Latinx?) student at Rice.

      Zach Alvear is a senior at Brown College majoring in Electrical Engineering with a certificate in Spanish Language and Communication. He was born and raised in Houston, Texas.       Dorothy Soto is a sophomore at Baker college majoring in mechanical engineering. She’s born in El Paso but grew up in Houston. As a freshman, Dorothy joined SHPE to meet other people with similar professional and academic goals. She became more involved as she went to SHPE nationals and went to many different company information sessions.         Pilar Canavosio
        Alumni Relations Chair

        Pilar is a Senior at Hanszen College majoring in Civil and Environmental Engineering with a concentration in Urban Infrastructure, Reliability, and Management. She is from Buenos Aires, Argentina but grew up in New Jersey. Pilar has had internships in alternative fueling and is excited about the future of renewable energy. She has bridged her love of the arts with STEM by starting ASTR* Art Magazine – an interdisciplinary design publication for Rice. She joined SHPE to find a community of like-minded people with similar cultural backgrounds and looks forward to further expanding the SHPE network to alums.         Ana Saucedo is a sophomore at Jones College studying mechanical engineering. She was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. Ana joined SHPE because of the great support system it has already provided to her and the sense of family that accompanies it. It has been a great resource to help her prepare for a career in engineering, and she gets to celebrate her Hispanic/Latinx heritage.         Juan Garza is a freshman at Brown College studying mechanical engineering. He was born and grew up in North Carolina Durham, while attending Durham School of the Arts. Juan joined SHPE because he wanted to grow professionally and seek guidance as he comes from a first generation, low-income background with no prior knowledge of college.         Vanessa Garlepp is a sophomore at McMurty College studying bioengineering. She is the child of parents from Esteli, Nicaragua and Salvador, Brazil and grew up in Austin, Texas. Vanessa joined SHPE to gain a network of fellow Hispanic engineers who share common cultural and professional values, as well as to take advantage of the numerous professional development opportunities.
